The Importance of Stretching

Often underestimated and little practiced , awareness of the importance of stretching has increased over the last 15 years. While we know our health and wellbeing depends on a vast number of components, stretching is definitely one of them.

It is mistakenly thought that stretching is something performed only by runners or gymnasts. But we all need to stretch in order to protect our mobility, prevent joint, muscle injuries and minimize muscle soreness. Stretching has to happen on a regular basis, ideally daily. Results only come along consistency. Weather you are preparing for a marathon or working in office all day, stretching concerns you. Stretching should never be painful. It should be pleasurable and relaxing and never muscles have to be overstretched going beyond what is comfortable.

What are the benefits of Stretching?

Stretching is important to maintain our muscles strong, flexible and healthy, help us to maintain a good range of movement and combat ageing. When we are stressed we contract our muscles so they become short and tight. Over the time this causes joint pain, muscle pain and make you prone to strains

When we stretch the muscles along with ligaments, tendons and fascia lengthen. A muscle able to fully stretch is a muscle more flexible with a good blood supply. More nutrients and oxygen means more power and strength to the muscles, faster healing and recovery from exercise as well as prevention from stiffness, soreness and injuries. A flexible muscle is less likely to become stiff and sore as well as injured. Practised regularly, it also helps improve our posture, keeping loose and reduce stress of everyday life.

When should we stretch?

Apart the necessary and proper stretching before and after work out, we need to stretch periodically throughout the day. The best is to create a routine and at least stretch every morning after waking up and in the evening before going to sleep. While the first 10 seconds are only enough to start relax our muscles, 20 or 30 seconds at least is the necessary time to hold our muscles in a stretched position.

Check your posture and technique!

Stretching should be performed with a very specific criterion. It is suggested to get a personalised stretching program from personal trainer, physiotherapist or a fitness instructor. Incorrect technique in fact can potentially lead to injury.
